CELEBRATING 10 Years of GETTING KIDS IN GEAR!
Proudly Founded by Bill Comrie
about us
The Calgary Flames Sports Bank was created through the generous contributions of Bill Comrie and the Comrie Family. Through Bill Comrie's passion and commitment the Southern Alberta Sports Bank became a reality in August of 2014. In July of 2020 Bill was able to pass the torch to the Calgary Flames and the Calgary Flames Foundation as the title partner to continue to build on the great work of the last 6 years of getting kids in gear. We are a program within the KidSport Calgary family and work with them to breakdown the two main barrier facing low income families when it comes to sports for their kids. Those are cost of fees and cost of equipment.
We were formed via a partnership of individuals representing key community groups – The Calgary Flames Foundation, KidSport Calgary, Wood Automotive Group, the Hockey Canada Foundation, the Hockey Alberta Foundation, Hockey Calgary, Sport Calgary, Rosenau Transport Ltd.

A note about our title partner - The Calgary Flames Foundation
The mandate of the Calgary Flames Foundation is to improve the lives of southern Albertans through support of health and wellness, education and grassroots sports programs. Since the ownership group brought the team to Calgary in 1980 the Calgary Flames Foundation has injected millions into the community. The Calgary Flames Foundation is working to remove barriers to sport with programs such as the Flames EvenStrength Program (a partnership with Hockey Calgary and KidSport Calgary), HEROS and Super HEROS, Flames Community Hockey League, Flames Community Arenas, Flames YMCA Grade 6 Program and support of the Every Kid Every Community program. #WePlayHere.

our goals
-
To gather, recycle and redistribute used sports equipment at no cost to those kids would otherwise be denied the opportunity to participate.
-
Help low income families in need provide opportunities for their kids to be able to pursue their dreams in sport as well as developing healthy and active lifestyles.
-
Help kids and families access used sports equipment at no cost where a need exists in Southern Alberta.
-
Deliver on the vision of our founder Bill Comrie, our board and our partners as we work to make sport more accessible for vulnerable kids throughout Southern Alberta.
how we work
-
We gather donations of gently used sports equipment which is screened to ensure it is safe and usable for kids. We do not repair sports equipment.
-
New equipment may be purchased from time to time supplement supply and/or meet safety standards.
-
Volunteers are the heart of our operation as they donate, gather, screen, sort, and distribute the sports equipment with the support of our team.
-
The organization is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.
-
As a not for profit organization we raise funds through fundraising events, corporate donations, and personal donations to support our operations.
